Dark Moon Dreams and Midsummer Travels

By | Seership, Spirit Work | No Comments

After a night of drinking with fellow witches I fell into a deep sleep. I dreamed it was night-time on a hill. All my witch friends were around me clad in black robes. They were going to sabbat and making plans with their covens. They all walked by me down the hill to their rituals. None of my friends saw me or acknowledged me. No one invited me to come with them. I was left standing alone in the dark. I felt sad, rejected, left out, and forgotten. I stood there staring at the darkness wondering what to do. Then, out of the misty black night three figures formed coming towards me. As they came closer to me I saw they were three elderly women, crones, but still beautiful and stately. They were clad in hooded dusky robes of grey-black with small flashes of deepest emerald, rich ruby,  sapphire and amethyst like light reflecting in a crow’s feathers. From their sleeves and hair dripped sea shells and stones. They saw me. They invited me. We stood by the sea beneath the dark moon on the hill. My mountain is by an inlet of the sea… Many covens have come and gone…

Dream Encounters with Moonwort

“And I ha’ been plucking plants among Hemlock, Henbane, Adder’s Tongue; Nightshade, Moonwort, Libbard’s bane, And twice, by the dogs, was like to be ta’en.” ~ Masque of Queens by Ben Johnson I have been haunted for years by a plant I’ve never seen. Like the great Yew tree, I encounter the Moonwort in my dreams. It is massive and greener than green – an exaggerated version of itself. In my dreams the crescent moon leaves are as big as the spread palm of a grown man’s hand and the spores are massive “moonberries” tempting me to pick them for my magic. Whenever I encounter it, it is always night in my dreams. Perhaps it should be harvested in darkness under the light of the moon… Moonwort is a species of Botrychium. It is believed there are seven or more species that naturally grow here as well as in Europe and elsewhere. It is in the fern family and reproduces with microscopic spores released into the air, but unlike ferns the spores are in “fruits” instead of on the leaves. A plant of the moon, the air, and water, it is associated with snakes as revealed in one of its names…

Yew Again

By | Seership, Spirit Work | No Comments

As I watch small birds pick insects to eat out of the moss-covered branches of an old Big Leaf Maple tree outside my window I remember my dream from last night. I saw the Yew tree again. I didn’t seek it out. I went through a door in a building and found myself outside on a seaside cliff. I saw roots and I looked up and there was the old twisted Yew tree still covered in fleshy red berries with ancient thin stone steps spiraling up and down it’s length. I remember being so excited to see it again. I got a better look at the tree this time. The cliff it had grown by had slowly been eroded over time by the waves of the sea and the steps were crumbling. It wouldn’t be long before the tree fell into the sea despite all the thousands of years it had been there. I sat at the base of the tree’s roots. “When the tree falls the world will end”, I whispered. I had bought a pouch of organic American Spirit tobacco before I visited the tree in my dream (I seem to do a lot of shopping in my dreams). A suitable…

Dreaming of Yew

By | Seership, Witchcraft & Magic | No Comments

Last night I dreamed of an ancient twisted Yew tree covered in fleshy red berries. It grew outside of a stone doorway twisting out of the stone steps beneath. Its roots firmly grasping the stairs and the earth beneath them. The stone door and stairs had to be even more ancient to have this sacred tree growing out of them. Yew trees live for thousands upon thousands of years after all.  Beyond the tree I only remember blue sky and possibly the ocean. Perhaps its time to visit the old Yew tree I discovered while on my way to the Masonic cemetery… I remember participating in a ritual out of doors with other witches. I remember how good it felt to do it outside in the wilds and fresh air. How right it felt. Upon waking I remembered one of my goals for this year is to work outside more. The ancestors and the genius loci don’t understand working indoors. I must change my perception to see what they see. A door, a stair, a tree, a ritual, and a debt paid to an old woman.

Dreaming of An Bradán Feasa

By | Animism, Seership, Spirit Work | No Comments

An Bradán Feasa is the Salmon of Knowledge – of the hazel tree, wisdom, divination and prophecy. Last night I dreamed of salmon – both young minnows swimming downstream to the ocean and mature salmon returning upstream to the place of their birth. Dreaming of salmon means that my time will be full of activities I love and enjoy and that I will also have much good luck. The young minnows are my plans, dreams and goals swimming out to make their fortune in the sea. The mature salmon are the fruits of my labours showing that I will succeed in my endeavours and not be taken to the underworld of the sea by disappointment, bitterness, or failure. By my dream taking the form of salmon I know that it relates to my intellectual and spiritual pursuits, my religion, my writing and my artwork. I take this as a sign that I am on the right path and that I still have a long ways to go, but it will be well worth it. I have so many projects on the go right now I can’t even tell you – mostly because if I think of them all at once…
